Cookie’s Fortune To begin, this movie has a great beginning; it pulled me right into it.This is something not usually seen in movies of this type, so it makes it an unusual, yet pleasant experience.The action scenes are really great. Glenn Close played his role great. Julianne Moore actually caught my interest.
If you love watching Glenn Close or Julianne Moore, you are deffinetly going to want to watch Cookie’s Fortune.
Dedicated fans of Robert Altman will want to check out this drowsy Southern comedy, which is shot through with the director’s feel for location and his musical sense of storytelling. Non-Altman fanatics might want to tread more carefully. Cookie’s Fortune begins beautifully, as handyman Willis (Charles S. Dutton) staggers home from a blues club in the small town of Holly Springs, Mississippi. In the wee hours of a warm night, he has an affectionate chat with elderly matriarch Jewel Mae “Cookie” Orcutt (the grand Patricia Neal) and the gentle history of their friendship is sketched in a few brief exchanges. Soon enough, Cookie has checked out of this world to join her dear departed husband, prompting her nieces to make the suicide look like a murder—to protect the dubious family name, of course. They are the local drama diva (Glenn Close), a Scarlett O’Hara in her own mind, and her dreamy sister (Julianne Moore), who ain’t quite right in the head. Will Willis be blamed for the murder? Will the inheritance go to the nieces? Will Liv Tyler and Chris O’Donnell find a place to express their lust? None of these questions is especially burning, and Altman doesn’t seem terribly anxious about the answers. Instead, he aims for a particular kind of laid-back quirky southern comedy, unevenly filtered through his screen of sour irony. Like a jazzman blowing improv, some of this works and some of it doesn’t. Speaking of music, the film boasts a nifty R&B soundscape devised by former Eurythmics man David Stewart, with a boost from blues belter Ruby Wilson. –Robert Horton

The action is fast and the laughs are even more furious as Walsh and Matt do all they can to escape being rookie police officers, while accidentally becoming amazing crime fighters. Among the very best of the 18 buddy films that Spencer and Hill starred in, CRIME BUSTERS is one guilty pleasure that should be watched over and over again!

Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) is the quintessential Wall Street shark, scoring killer deals by day and shallow escort sex by night. His round-the-clock routine of empty luxuries is disturbed one lonely Christmas Eve when a gun-packing punk (Don Cheadle)–perhaps an angel of mercy–responds to an altruistic gesture from Jack by giving him “a glimpse” of the life he could have had. Could have, that is, if he had married the girlfriend (Téa Leoni) he’d abandoned 13 years earlier, raised two adorable children, worked in his father-in-law’s retail tire outlet, and lived happily ever after in suburban New Jersey. Thrust into this “glimpse” of the path not taken, Jack’s a single-malt man in a lite-brew world, wondering if he’ll ever return to his “better” life of callous wealth and solitude–or if he even wants to.
Carp all you want about this derivative premise, with its marginal stereotypes and biased embrace of domestic bliss and dirty diapers. The simple fact is, The Family Man works like a charm. Under the assured direction of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), this holiday crowd-pleaser offers comedy and chemistry in equal measure, making the hilarity of Jack’s predicament a smooth catalyst for that rarest of movie romances: the marital love story. Leoni is Cage’s perfect match as Jack’s idealized but imperfect wife, and the movie’s appeal largely derives from its awareness that any life has its pleasures and pains. While it only flirts with the dark desperation that makes It’s a Wonderful Life a classic predecessor, The Family Man is an irresistible what-if fantasy, and even its debatable ending rides on a wave of genuine warmth and sentiment. –Jeff Shannon
